The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI),established in 1966, is a leading automotive research and development organization in India, jointly founded by the Indian automotive industry and the Indian government. It operates under the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises.
Certification Process:
Submission of Application Documents:
The applicant must submit the following to ARAI: an application letter, a power of attorney for coordination and signing, technical specifications in the AIS 007 format, drawings/layouts as per AIS 007, quality system documentation, a copy of the type approval certificate, production conformity certificate, BIS license for safety-critical components, and WMI/WMC certificate (for VIN number).
Document Review:
ARAI reviews the submitted documents to check for completeness and accuracy, verifying that the product design and technical parameters comply with relevant standards and regulatory requirements.
Sample Testing:
Upon successful document review, the applicant must send product samples to a designated laboratory in India for testing. Test items vary depending on the component but generally cover safety and performance aspects, such as the acoustic characteristics of automotive horns, durability, and reliability tests.
Factory Audit:
For initial applications that pass sample testing, ARAI will dispatch auditors to conduct an on-site factory inspection. This audit assesses the manufacturer's production facilities, processes, and quality control systems to confirm alignment with the submitted quality system documentation.
Issuance of Certificate:
After successful completion of the factory audit and testing, ARAI issues the certification certificate and test report to the manufacturer. A type approval number is assigned, which the manufacturer must mark on the certified products.
